Skin: Always start with clean skin and moisturizer. Choose a moisturizer formulated for your skin type. For dry skin, look for products that contain sunscreen. For oily skin, look for water based or oil free formulas. For combination skin, apply only to the driest areas of the face, avoiding the forehead, nose, and chin.

Foundation: Foundation comes in different forms; liquid, powder, and cream. Powder foundation is best for oily skin, cream for dry skin, and liquid for all skin types. Look for a shade closest to your natural skin colour. To test a shade, do not try it on your hand as the skin is a different shade from your face. Try a little on your jaw line to find the shade that blends in or disappears into your skin. When you find your perfect shade, apply it to your face with your finger, brush, or make-up sponge. Make sure you blend it into your skin, and down your jaw line to your neck.

Concealer: Concealer also comes in different forms, the most popular being a tube of liquid with an attached brush or a cream. It is used to hide dark circles under the eyes, and blemishes. Choose a colour one shade lighter than your skin. Apply a little under your eyes and blend well. Apply a dab on a blemish or red spot , and blend out into the surrounding skin.

Blush: Blush is available in cream, powder, and stain. Cream is best for dry skin, powder for oily skin, and stain for all skin types. For fair skin, choose pink colours. For medium skin, choose corals and oranges. For dark skin, choose plums and purples. For the most natural look, smile and apply blush to the apples of your cheeks.

Lipstick: For longer lasting lipstick, use a lip liner pencil first. Choose a liner the same colour as your lipstick, and trace the natural line of your lips. Fill in the rest of your lips with liner, then apply your lipstick. For dry lips, use a clear gloss on top. To choose the right for your skin colour, follow the same colour guide as described in the section on blush.

Eyes: Eye shadow is available in powders and creams. Unlike other make-up, it’s not necessary to match your skin tone to the right shade. You can have fun picking the colours! Eye liners come in liquid or pencil form, although pencil is always recommended for the novice. Use the pencil to draw a line above and below your eyelids, making sure you get as close to the lash line as possible. For the finishing touch, curl your lashes and apply mascara.
